Little artist at work...

"As you can see in this composition, I have really emphasized the negative space with sparse use of line and organic shape."

The last time...

This blog has been the record of so many firsts for Kieran: first bottle, first tooth, first bite of "solid" food, first step, first birthday... so many exciting and wonderful first moments in the life of a child. But what about the equally precious last moments: last bottle, last baby food, last bath in the baby tub, last day as a one-year-old? These seem to pass us by without so much as a second glance because we are so busy celebrating the new first that typically follows an end. I didn't want this last moment in Kieran's life to go by without noting it's passing in our blog.

Last Wednesday appears to be the last time I will nurse my son because Kieran has decided he is done- ready or not mama. We have been down to one feeding (more or less) for the past month- the morning nursing has been the last precious time when Kieran would lie still, curl up next to me in bed and just be. I have to admit I am going to sorely miss this five or ten minutes of peace and love because although he is still a lover of hugs, kisses and holding hands, he is never in my arms for long before he's running off to his next adventure.

In the past Kieran would wake up in the morning and cry or call my name and I would go to him and he would lead me back to the bedroom to lie down and nurse. The last morning, he slept in and so I got myself and everything else ready before finally rousing my little man. This time I carried him to our bedroom as he was still dazed with sleep. I had already made the bed and so we sat in the glider instead to nurse. How appropriate that the last place we would share this precious moment was in the chair we had nursed in so many days and nights over the past two years. Although I didn't know this would be the last time, I do remember it very clearly. I remember the weight of his little body, limp and totally at ease in my arms and I remember thinking how big he had grown and that his legs now fell over my lap and dangled down instead of fitting snuggly in my arms like they had as an infant. I remember his soft little warm hands at my breast and on my own hands. I remember laying my head back and rocking gently in the early light of the morning and being so at ease and so in love.

The next morning, I peeked in at Kieran to find him still asleep and so I left the door cracked and went to get ready. As I was putting on my mascara he toddled in to the bathroom, rubbing his eyes, pink cheeked and wild blond hair. He took my hand and I went, expecting to be led to the bed. Instead, he walked right past that little haven and marched me straight into the living room, demanding trains and wa-wa. I was shocked, this was the first time he had ever shown no interest in nursing, no little grunty-cough or tugs at my shirt- it was if he had grown into a little boy over night and bid such infantile things good bye as he slept. I just went with it, marveling at it all day. The following morning, he awoke crying and I was sure it would be a struggle to distract him from nursing and that I would probably give in, but again he surprised me. He did half-heartily make his nursing gestures but when I suggested we go watch trains and eat breakfast, he jumped at the offer and was running down the hallway in front of me in a flash. And so weaning began in earnest.

It has been over a week since Kieran last nursed and he has seemed completely at ease with the transition and I am so proud of him and in awe of how he was just "ready". I, on the other hand, was perhaps not 100% there yet, but I have known the time was coming for quite a while now. I am surprised at how physically uncomfortable I have been and how long the "drying up" is taking, but I think I am finally on the downhill slide.

Kieran isn't a baby anymore, but he will always be my baby, no matter how many firsts and lasts come and go in his amazing life.

Year number two, in review.

Dear Kieran,

Your second year of life has been filled with so many changes and surprises. We sold our first home in Jefferson City in October and moved in with grandma and grandpa. You loved living there, lots of space to run, plenty of toys and of course your grandparent's love. After six months though, of living in their basement, we were all ready for our own space again.

On March 12th, on your 2nd birthday, we moved into your our new home, at 111 Brian Lane in Ashland. You have been adjusting beautifully to your new surroundings and seem completely settled in after only two weeks. You went from sleeping in the the same room with us, and often times in our bed, to your own bed in your own room. You love the open floor plan and do laps from the dining room, living room and kitchen at break-neck speeds. We are excited to get the yard grassed and fenced and spend lots of time outside this summer with you and the dogs.

The first night we slept in the new house, we converted your crib to a toddler bed, taking off one of the sides, because you had begun climbing out of your crib and we worried you would hurt yourself. I fretted that you wouldn't be able to sleep in such new and different circumstances, but you put my mind at ease the first night and slept soundly in your own big boy bed in your very own room! I still wake up at night and sneak into your room to check on you, and although sometimes you are sleeping on the floor or half in and out of your bed, you are soundly asleep and wake well rested and ready to go.

Your vocabulary has really taken off the last couple months and it is fun to hear what's on your mind! Some of your newer words include: High up top, train, wheels, tracks, top-top (helicopter), bear, ice, bum-bum (snowman), stop, go, run, play, pet, doot-doot (car), eyes, ears, nose, hair, hat, ewwws!, and bubble. You put together little sentences, such as "Stop it mom!", "I eat!", "Out of the way!" and "I want that!" or "I don't want that!" You are great at sound effects, such as screeching breaks, crash sounds and train/car noises. You also make so many animal sounds, better than mommy in fact! You get frustrated with us when we don't understand what you want, but every day you say more and more and we understand you better and better. Keep talking little one, we love to your sweet little voice and want to know what you're thinking!

Your motor skills, fine and gross, are improving in leaps and bounds every day. You may have been slow to walk, but you have made up for that by running- everywhere and you are very fast! You climb like a little monkey, which is why the crib had to go. You are a little daredevil, throwing yourself over the sofas and climbing up slides at the playground. You have mastered utensils and prefer them more and more to your fingers. You stack small blocks with ease and string large beads. You brush your teeth like a big boy and have discovered how to open doors far too easily- leading to more baby proofing on our part!

You spend your week days at Tori's house with her twin four year old children, Spencer and Luke. You seem to like it there, although still fuss when mommy leaves. You play trucks and cars with Luke and love the girl's huge pink doll house. You usually take good naps for Tori and eat like a champ, better than you do for mommy and daddy. When I come to pick you up in the afternoon, you run to the door, arms spread wide, yelling "Mama!!". It's the best part of my day. Next year we will send you to a Montessori preschool, but first we will have to get you ready this summer which means time to potty-train!

Kieran it has been so much fun watching you grow from an infant into a busy toddler. You are constantly on the go and keep us on our toes. You seem to be developing a temperament similar to your mothers, strong willed, persistent and loud! You look like your father more and more theses days with your intense blue-gray eyes. You have the straightest, finest, silkiest hair- could have gotten that from either one of us though ;) You make us laugh every day and try our patients pretty regularly too. When you are happy, you beam like spring sunshine and when you are mad you are a stormy little cloud that's hard to ignore. You are a lover, freely giving hugs, kisses and tickles. You love anything that goes, in particular trains. You are becoming a TV addict, something we are going to have to work on- Car's is your newest favorite show. You can't get enough outside time- whether you are pushing your giant yellow truck up and down the sidewalks or digging in the mud, you are a lover of the out of doors for sure. You are our little boy and we love you more than we could ever express in words or writing. We can't wait to see what's next, we love you Kieran.

Kieran's belated birthday!

This blog is a little late in coming. Kieran's 2nd birthday was March 12th, the day we moved into our new home so we postponed the party till the following Saturday so we could have it at the house. The party was a great success with lots of family, friends, gifts and far too much delicious food! We only just now got internet access up and running, so I didn't have an opportunity to post about the party until now.
Rick took Kieran out of the house the day of the party so I could prepare the food, clean and get the gifts wrapped. By the time they got back home, most of our guests had arrived and with them lots of gifts and noise! Kieran wasn't sure what to think when he walked in the door- a bit shell-shocked!

What else but a train cake?! For his second birthday, in honor of Kieran's love of all things train, I made him a train cake complete with engine and cars! It was a big success!

Family members enjoy the spread- thank you so much to Sandy, Mom and Joyce for bringing so much great food!

The menfolk partake of the goodies!

Grandma Sandy and Aaron's boys.

The grandmas and kids at the train table- a source of delight and frustration for everyone ;)

Aaron's boys were fascinated with the dogs and although the dogs were thrilled at first to get some attention, they weren't quite sure what to think about hours of so much love!

Braydon's face says, "I Love dogs!" while Neko's says, "Please get me out of here!" Best quote of the day: Jaron "Is this your new house Aunt Susan?" Me: "Yes, do you like it?" Jaron: "Ya, it's nice and the dogs are GREAT!"

The Rother clan taking the shibas for an afternoon stroll.

Dad trying to free a toy car from it's packaging... Kieran looks so serene and happy- too bad it didn't last!

The grown ups playing with a frog puppet/washcloth. Although he wasn't too interested at the time, Kieran loves this thing at bath time now!

The kids playing nice (for a very short time) with some stringing beads.

When Kieran wasn't crying, he watched Cars off and on through out the party.

All the gifts, people and sugar proved to be too much for our intense little man.

A single tear and a pink bow- what a great look!

Uncle Furcin got in on the gift-unwrapping as Kieran wasn't too interested in this aspect of the party.

Jaron with the big red bow- he is so great with Kieran.

Amongst the gifts...

What a funny face! Kieran really did love the cake, although he could hardly wait for the candles to blown out to grab a train car and start gnawing on it!

Cutting and dolling out the cake- mmm, green tastes soooo good!

Kieran with his train car cupcake and flanked by his many toy car gifts.

Blue frosting is about all Kieran ate of his cake.

This time last year it was all hands, but 12 months later he has nearly mastered spoons and forks- what a big boy we have!

Presley loved the cake too and was quite  bit tidier with her's the Kieran!

Our new home, with furnishings!

Our new home with a beautiful evening sky as the backdrop. As you can see, no grass yet... but hopefully soon!

Another view of the front of our home- you can see the front porch rocker from our old place fits perfectly on our new porch as well!

The back covered porch. LOVE this space- can't wait to add some patio furniture and maybe screen it in.

The back porch door- you can see the bump-out here where the fireplace was added.

Front door viewed from living room with dining room/train table room to the left

Living room with our lovely new leather sofas and Kieran's paintings above the fireplace.

So glad we managed to find a spot for the large armoire- it is now a giant toy cabinet!

Living room from the kitchen- notice the new entertainment center and TV- yay!!

Breakfast bar with new barstools- love this space!

New kitchen table- perfect fit for the small space.

Kitchen and Kieran's kitchen too :)

View of living room from kitchen- it is so nice to make dinner/do dishes and be able to see the living room and what Kieran is up to!

The guest room- come stay with us!

More of the guest room.

Kieran's/guest bath- lots of color and pattern!

Kieran's room and HUGE window- thanks goodness for room darkening blinds!

Kieran's "big-boy" bed and book shelf. He has been sleeping all by himself, in his new room, and on his big boy bed all night- what a big boy we have!

Kieran's room.

Office with Neko and Kieran.

Book shelf in office.

Master bedroom with our new comforter- this is another favorite room!

Our bedroom with "sitting area"... wouldn't that be the perfect place to rock a new baby ;)

As you can see, we had no problem filling our walk-in-closet!

Master bathroom

LOVE the new shower!!

So nice to have our own vanity space!
