St. Louis Vist 2011

We took another mini-trip this week, this time to St. Louis to visit the Magic House and zoo. We stayed with friends of ours from Chicago who have recently relocated to the St. Louis area. After spending a sweltering morning at Pirate's Cove pool with some girlfriends and their children we had a little lunch and got on the road and were so glad to see our plan worked- Kieran was thoroughly worn out and slept most of the way to Irene's house. We picked up our friend and headed off to the Magic House in St. Charles. Kieran visted this children's museum last year and remembered the model train area very well and made a b-line for it as soon as we got there! We spent a lot of time there pushing buttons and watching trains run on the tiny little tracks while Kieran ran up and down making his train sounds and yelling "All-da-board!"
We finally did manage to convince Kieran that some of the other exhibits might be fun too and he finally relented and enjoyed lots of other play areas before returning to the trains one last time ;) That night we had a yummy dinner with Greg and Irene while Kieran ran around their new home, making it his own with his potty chair in tow and Monster's Inc. on their TV! Once Kieran was down, we really enjoyed spending time with our friends and having a drink, or two ;) Kieran slept okay until about 4 am but after that he was awake most of the early morning rolling around and talking.
After a breakfast at McDonald's Kieran slept on the way to the zoo and so did mommy ;) Kieran had a good time at the zoo, but had a few melt-downs due to the lack of sleep the night before and the intense temps- upwards of 100 degrees- yuck! Of course his primary objective at the zoo was to ride the train- which we did and he loved every minute of that! He also really liked a "tunnel" that was meant to look like the belly of a whale (not sure he ever caught on to that). He loved the penguins and we went through that exhibit a couple times- he ended up convincing us he needed a little hopping penguin toy as a souvenir :) We rode the carousel and that was a moderate success. He also really liked a sort of hands on children's building with sand and manipulatives he could interact with- this was the place we saw "Dorie" from Finding Nemo ;) We ate a yummy lunch at the Painted Giraffe Cafe and then hit the road and as expected, Kieran was out in five minutes flat and slept the entire way home despite a pit stop and some serious traffic :)
We all had a very nice trip but as usual it is lovely to be home again in our own space. Next week we will take our last mini-vacation down to Onondoga state park to stay in a cabin and play in the creek. More to come on that trip soon...
Kieran and the model trains at The Magic House. I am surprised we don't have more pics seeing as how we stayed here for half an hour!

A tunnel in the Magic House- Kieran said he was looking for a mouse ;)

Kieran is really into "cleaning" right now and took this dust pan all around the construction area in the Magic House "cleaning" up the rocks and dirt ;)

Mommy and Kieran in the penguin house- this is a great exhibit on a hot day- very coooold inside!

On the carousel- he was just about to loose it because he heard a train pulling into the station and wanted to get on NOW!

Finally- on the train at last!

I think next time we go we will buy a pass so that we can just ride the train around three or four times- he can't get enough!

Kieran on the car ride home- completely zonked out!

Kieran's new school!

Kieran will begin preschool at KIM (Kids In Montessori) school next month in Jefferson City. Rick and I have toured many area preschools in both Ashland and Jefferson City but nothing compared to KIM. We really like the Montessori approach to education which mixes children of different ages and supports learning through independent discovery and exploration. We also really like that KIM school seems very peaceful and calm whenever we visit. The setting is very tranquil with a three room school house sitting in the middle of rolling pastures and surrounded by woods with the Moreau river running through it. The school also has a small barn with a few animals that the children help to care for. We are very excited for Kieran to begin school at the end of the month, when Rick and I head back to work. We will be sure to post pictures and more updates about Kieran's new school as the year unfolds.
KIM school- isn't it a lovely setting?

This the backpack I want to get for Kieran's first preschool experience- too cute huh?!

Of course every little preschool needs a matching lunch bag ;)

Kieran's words so far...

Although many of Kieran's words are still a bit muddled and hard to understand, especially for people other than his mother and father, he still has quite a vocabulary these days. It seems like he learns half a dozen new words or more every day now- it's crazy! This summer has been Kieran's word explosion! Here are a list of all the words Rick and I could think of- let me know if I missed something ;)

Potty people throw your hands in the air!

We have officially been potty learning (training) for the past five days and we are so happy and proud to report that Kieran has been doing GREAT! We prepped him with a potty video and a few books, including "How to Potty Train Your Monster" which is super cute! We also got Kieran a potty chair (which we moved to the living room temporarily), a potty monster, a potty bank, lots of gummy snacks, big boy undies and pull-ups for the occasion. The first day he was off to a great start by pooping in his potty with no problems but then he faltered a bit when it came to peeing- he just didn't quite seem to know when to expect it and had a few accidents. However, as the day went on, he would squirt just a little and then stop and go sit on his potty to finish. After the first day, he was like an old pro- going to the potty without reminders and with fewer and fewer accidents. He even did great on the days we took him out to lunch and over to his grandparent's houses- going on the big potties without hesitation or problem- way to go big boy!! He still doesn't have the whole pulling down and up of the pants thing figured out quite yet, so he has spent the last few days with a nude bottom (otherwise he sits down on the potty and goes right through his underwear!)- but I am sure we will get there soon enough. We couldn't be more pleased with his progress- he even had a dry pull-up after a nap yesterday! WOW!! Hopefully this trend will continue and he will be ready for his big-boy-school come September! Below are pics of Kieran enjoying his "freedom" sans pants as well as sans underwear as we work on potty training...
The Potty Monster book- such a fun book! We got Kiearn the striped green monster from Yo Gaba Gabe so he could train his own monster too!

Kieran with his potty monster- note the big-boy-undies on both boy and monster... Kieran says his name is, "Raaargh!"

Playing blocks in his undies.

Koshie helps out.

One big perk for Kieran during this whole process- in addition to going without pants and eating lots of gummy-bears is getting to watch just about as much TV as he wants- another insensitive to sit on that pot!

Although he has eaten waaaay more sugar than usual, we still managed to sneak in the odd bit of "health" food!

George didn't want to be outdone by the monster- so he decided to potty-train too!

Kieran and daddy this morning playing with play-dough- lots of towels have been used in this process on chairs and sofas- just in case!

Putting his play-dough Koshie through the "doggie door".

Play-dough daddy after Kieran has put a large hole in the chest area- he looks so proud ;)

Kieran and Presley in our pool- he even would get out of the pool to potty- what a good boy!

In the inflatable pool at nana and papa's house- going fishing :)

Shannon got this "ATV" as a hand-me-down from a friend for Presley who turned out to be terrified of it. Kieran, on the other had, loves it and calls it his "car" and drives it every chance he gets- with or without pants ;)
